d.i.y. bangs a la christian lacroix

Faux fringe was the call du jour at Christian Lacroix yesterday, where models sported thick, eye-grazing bangs to make indie rock enthusiasts swoon. If you want to play Lacroix at home, Allison Woodruff, a stylist at Sally Hershberger Downtown, has a bit of advice: “Clip-on wefts,” she says, pointing out that when it comes to faking it, cutting the adhesive strips commonly found backstage at fashion shows yourself far outweighs wearing those newfangled hair bands with bangs attached (”those can look really bad,” she warns). To gauge the width of your bangs so they’re not too wide and not too narrow, Woodruff suggests brushing hair forward and then pushing up on both sides above the temples, where recession typically occurs in men. “Your hair will naturally split there,” she says. As far as length goes, that’s a personal decision every woman needs to make on her own. But Woodruff offers two good pointers to avoid bang remorse: Smaller scissors are better for trimming (think manicurists’ tools), and it’s best to cut down into pieces, rather than across, so you have more control. (Accidentally going rockabilly-short can be sort of scarring.)
